Local note
The Asphalt Roofing Manufacturers Association says the black streaks are an algae (Gloeocapsa magma) and are mainly a looks problem, while moss can lift shingle edges. Its advice is a cleaning solution and a low-pressure rinse, and never a pressure washer on asphalt shingles.

The roofing industry says the streaks are mostly a looks problem. Moss is different: it can lift the edges of shingles, so it's worth removing.
Moss grows on the roof slopes that get the least sun, usually the north side, because they stay damp longest.
